Lower Dolores River Description

Family fun abounds in this deep desert canyon playground. The trips early class III and gentle class II+ rapids make for interesting floating as we soak in the canyon scenery. Great beaches, sandstone, camping, hiking and history characterize this trip. This is our most popular multi-day youth group trip.

Dolores River Trip Itinerary

Day 1

8:00 or 10:00

Assemble at Mild to Wild's office in Moab, Utah or at 10:00 meet in Bedrock, Colorado to meet your new friends, your Mild to Wild Rafting guides.

10:45

Launch. Enjoy scenic floating.

11:30

Enter the "Hanging Flume Canyon" with its class III rapids including "Lost Oar" and "Trap Rapid".

12:30

Stop for lunch on a large inviting beach. Enjoy fresh delicious deli sandwiches.

1:30

Begin your boating wonder at the historic Hanging Flume, 150 ft. up the canyon wall.

2:00

River doubles in size as we boat past the entrance of the San Miguel River.

3:30

Set-up deluxe camp - tables, chairs and all!

4:00

Hike to a spectacular arch with a cascading waterfall at its base.

6:30

Enjoy a wonderful and filling steak and salmon feast.

7:30

Campfire and entertainment with games and stories of local traditions provided by your multi-talented guides!

 

Day 2

7:30 A.M.

Enjoy fresh coffee as you sit peacefully by the river's edge watching the morning sun play tricks on canyon walls. Our hearty cowboy breakfast will energize you for the day's fun.

Begin boating with departure from the "Hanging Flume Canyon" for the wilder "Mesa Canyon". Its big sandy beaches and playful class II rapids are so inviting.

11:30

Take the river on in an inflatable kayak to explore those hidden spots as you command your own vessel under the watchful eye of your guide.

12:00

Savor another delicious lunch.

1:00 P.M.

Relax in a raft or try an inflatable kayak! Soak up the scenery!

Hike to "Juanita Arc" up a spectacular side canyon.

4:00

Arrive at another spectacular camp with time to explore.

6:00

Enjoy a great Italian dinner: Caesar salad, fresh bread & delicious pasta.

Relax around campfire, under starry sky. Share the day's highlights.

 

Day 3

7:30 P.M.

Wake up to the smell of eggs and bacon. Get ready for another day of fun.

9:30

Soak up the great canyon scenery as we tackle more mild rapids.

10:00

Float past "Mushroom Rock".

11:00

Fill water jugs from the fresh spring of "Salt Canyon".

11:20

"Maverick Canyon" and "Peregrine" rapids (class III-) provide the day's excitement.

12:00

Hungry yet? Lets Chow!

1:00 P.M.

Raft, swim, kayak and fill the afternoon with fun in this spectacular canyon with spectacular red rock.

Rejuvenate in camp on our own private island for your last night of escape!

5:00

Feast on the guide-prepared specialty dinner and dessert!

7:00

Campfire, games, stories of local traditions and shared experiences.

 

Day 4

7:30 P.M.

Another surprisingly delicious breakfast of pancakes with hot syrup, topped with fresh fruit and berries.

9:30

Prepare for "Cave Canyon" rapid (class III-) & "Larson" rapid (class II+).

10:00

Enjoy one last canyon exploration.

12:00

Enjoy lunch as you prepare yourself for the return to reality of life off the river.

Arrive at the take-out, de-rig boats.

3:00

Load shuttle for return to civilization.

4:00

Return to Bedrock, Colorado

5:30

Arrive Moab. Say goodbye until next time!
