2007 Rafting Guide School

Who:

Anyone desiring to learn river navigation of a raft for private or commercial trips. Learn both oar and paddle boat navigational skills.

No Experience Required

When:

May 14 - 25, 2007

Where:

Southwest Area Rivers. Based out of Durango, CO

This course exceeds the Colorado State requirements (Colorado requirements are stricter than Arizona’s) for guide certification.

These courses are for the person who wants to be the complete guide. Skills training will include:

  • leadership
  • group dynamics
  • meal preparation
  • crew orientation
  • river rescue
  • raft rigging
  • reading river current
  • and river navigation in both oar and paddle boat rafts.

Upon completion of either course you will exceed the requirements of a class III river guide (subject to completion of separate first-aid and CPR training). These are intensive courses that emphasize skill training and personal development amid the spectacular setting of deep rock canyons and river corridors. Tuition includes state certified instructors, transportation from our meeting point, life jacket, helmet and boating equipment.

Arizona Rafting Guide Training*

No Arizona course is offered in 2007.

Colorado Rafting Guide Training*

This ten-day course is available at a cost of $595.

Thermal rental package (fleece, skull-cap, wetsuit, splash jacket and booties) is available for either session at the value price of $50. Payment in full at the time of reservation is preferred (credit cards accepted) but a non-refundable $100 deposit will secure your seat in the class. The balance must be paid two weeks prior to the start of the course.

CO Comprehensive White Water Rafting Guide School

Mild to Wild Rafting will conduct 2 instructional guide schools in 2006. Our 11-day comprehensive course will certify participants as Colorado class III river guides.

Comprehensive Course

The cost for this course is $595

Our comprehensive course, which runs from, May 15 - May 25 covers all aspects of guiding a river trip and is for the person who wants to become a complete guide. Skills training will include; leadership, group dynamics, meal preparation, crew orientation, river rescue, raft rigging, river navigation for multi-day and single day raft trips. Upon completion, all participants will exceed the requirements for a Colorado class III river guide. This course includes 3 days on the San Miguel a day on the Colorado River and one day on the Piedra, with the remainder of the class days on Durango's Animas River.

Tuition includes food on the away portion of the school, as well as shuttles from Durango on all training days. This is an intensive course that emphasizes skill training in an inspiring outdoor setting of red rock canyons.

The cost for this course is $595

This comprehensive course emphasizes river-reading techniques not memorization of set routes. This enables our trainees to guide on class III water anywhere, not just on those sections previously run. Classes include instructors, transportation, life jacket, helmets, and boating equipment.

It is highly recommended that participants take advantage of our thermal package, which includes; fleece jacket, fleece cap, wetsuit, booties, and splash jacket. This package costs $50 for the course, provided for the river swim day.

A $100 deposit is required to secure your seat in the class and is non-refundable. The balance must be paid 10-days prior to the first day of class or your spot may be forfeit.

Salt River River Guide Training

Salt River Guide Certification Class*

NO ARIZONA COURSE IS OFFERED IN 2007

This seven-day course is designed to familiarize you with all aspects of boating and the majestic Salt River canyon and its environs. The main focus will be on paddleboats although we will use two days to focus on learning how to operate and rig oar boats.

Skills learned will include: leadership, group dynamics, and decision-making, organizing and rigging.

The standard course emphasizes river-reading techniques not memorization of set routes. This enables our trainees to guide on class III water anywhere, not just on those sections previously run. Classes include instructors, transportation, life jacket, helmets, and boating equipment.

It is highly recommended that participants take advantage of our thermal package, which includes; fleece jacket, fleece cap, wetsuit, booties, and splash jacket. This package costs $50 for the course, provided for the river swim day.

Course cost is $450. Additional cost is White Mountain Apache permit of $10 a day or $70 for the entire class.

A $100 deposit is required to secure your seat in the class and is non-refundable. The balance must be paid 10-days prior to the first day of class or your spot may be forfeit.

* If water levels are not sufficient on the Salt River the course will be move to another Southwest river and will assemble in are Moab office rather than are Salt river office.
