The Upper Animas offers the most extreme and demanding white water rafting in Colorado. Deep within the Weminuche Wilderness, this section drops an average of 85 feet per mile with continuous Class III-V rapids, making it the most difficult commercially run river in the US. Our trips on the “milder” Needleton Section require physical fitness and a pre-trip orientation. This adventure includes a ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

What is the best time of year for river rafting in Colorado?

The rafting season typically runs from May through September. Peak flows with the most exciting whitewater usually occur from late May to late June during the snowmelt runoff. July and August offer warmer weather and more moderate flows, which are perfect for families.

Avoid cotton clothing. We recommend synthetic layers (like nylon or fleece), a swimsuit, and secure footwear like river sandals or old sneakers. For cooler spring trips, we provide wetsuit and splash gear rentals to keep you warm.
